19th-century Żaqq and tanbur musicians
A lithograph (Brocktorff) which was published in 1838 by George Percy Badger in A Description of Malta and Gozo. It shows a piper accompanied by the tanbur player who is performing a gyrating dance. The bagpipe is depicted with legs pointing upwards. The chanter is inserted into the neck and terminates in a bull horn and the low pipe is inserted into a foreleg. The two instrumentalists generally performed as a duo with the tambourine player attracting all the attention.
